James Richard “Ricky” Spires, Sr., 79, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Pine Pointe Hospice in Macon. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Hart’s at the Cupola on Friday, July 10, 2026, beginning at 2:00 in the afternoon. A period for visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to Fall Line Church, 2254 Rocky Creek Road, Macon, GA 31206, are encouraged.
Ricky was born October 21, 1949, to the late James Albert and Helen Yawn Spires. He was raised in Macon and attended A. R. Willingham High School. He continued his education at Georgia Southwestern College and joined Sigma Chi Fraternity as a founding member of the Eta Theta Chapter. Ricky joined his father’s business, Spires Electric, and built a career in commercial motor repair until its close. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing the St. John’s River and spending time with his family and friends.
Ricky was a man who truly loved people and was dedicated to building community and fostering a love of sports in children. He never met a stranger—a trip to the Forsyth Road Kroger meant catching up with everyone he passed. For years, he poured his heart into coaching youth sports in the Macon area, first leading the Bullpups girls’ softball and basketball teams, and later coaching both of his sons in every sport they played. Ricky’s love language was gift-giving, and he was happiest when finding thoughtful ways to remind his family and friends just how much they meant to him.
In addition to his parents, Ricky was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Harrison Spires; and sisters, Jenny Spires Mulligan and Delores Spires Sharpe. He is survived by his daughter, Kellie Davis (Jeffrey) of Blairsville, Georgia; two sons, Rick Spires (Britney) and Hal Spires (Morgan), both of Macon; grandchildren, Jacqueline Davis; Lucas Spires; Georgia Spires; and Charlie Spires; a sister, Patsy Spires Ruip (Ted) of Macon; many nieces and nephews; and many close friendships which spanned his lifetime.
