James Avera, Jr., 84, passed away Tuesday, December 29, 2015. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, with the Reverends Stephen N. Johnson and Lonzy Edwards officiating. Family will greet friends between 4:00-6:00PM on Saturday, January 2, 2016 at the Cupola. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Macon Rescue Mission, 774 Hazel Street, Macon, Georgia 31201. Chief Avera was the son of the late Milton James Avera, Sr. and Mary Thelma Carr Avera. He was the Chief Deputy of Bibb County Sheriff's Department, Chief of Police with the City of Macon, and Chief Deputy of Jones County Sheriff's Department. Survivors include his children, Alleyne Avera Benson (Duward) of Culloden, Tria Avera (Adair) of Macon, and Leigh Ann Avera of Macon; five grandchildren, Joshua Benson, Matthew Benson, Nicholas Benson of Culloden, Hudson Avera, and Montgomery Jo Avera of Macon; brother, David Avera of Jones County; and sister, Ramona Harrell of Macon.
