James “Doc” Herndon, 76, of Gray, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at Central Baptist Church, located on the corner of Gray Highway and Graham Road in Gray, Georgia. Mr. Ken Maples and Dr. Tommy Jordan will be officiating the service. His visitation will be held one hour before the service. James will be laid to rest next to his wife, Mrs. Polly Greene Herndon, at Bradley Baptist Church located at 821 Monticello Highway, in Gray, Georgia.
James was born on December 1, 1948, in Jennings, Florida, to the late Wilbur and Dora Mae Godwin. He was a Western Movie fanatic and enjoyed fishing. James was known as a “grass cutting machine” and loved to make sure his yard was beautiful and perfect. He was a member of Central Baptist Church. James loved his family dearly and loved his grandchildren, who knew him affectionately as “Poppie”.
James is survived by his children, Lori Haynes, Shawn Herndon (Melissa), and Devin Herndon (Cricket); his grandchildren, Shelby Watkins (James), Dustin Herndon (Marissa), Lacy Herndon, Dylan Herndon (Riley), Bryson Herndon, Austyn Herndon, and Dakota Herndon; his great-grandchildren, Christopher, Karsen, Jackson, Daxton, Dawson, and Dutton; and his sister, Blanche Bealsey. He is preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Polly; his great-grandson, Karter Herndon; and his five siblings.
