J. Michael (Mike) Myers

December 23, 1939 — October 5, 2017

J. Michael (Mike) Myers, 77, of Macon, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 5, 2017. He was a longtime coach and teacher in public schools in Florida and Georgia. Born in New Martinsville, West Virginia, he served in the U.S. Army. He later attended West Virginia State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Social Sciences in 1968. Coach Myers began his career as a coach and educator in the public schools of Miami, Florida, and, later, Jacksonville, Florida. He moved to Macon, Georgia, where he taught and coached at Appling Middle School in the Bibb County School District for 25 years. He coached football, track, soccer, and wrestling. He was especially proud of his championship wrestling teams. An avid outdoorsman, he especially enjoyed salt-water fishing. He spent most of his leisure time on the water. Coach Myers was predeceased in death by his mother, Mary Rosalie Myers, his father, Ingrim Myers Jr., and his brother, Barry Myers. He is survived by his nephew, Robb Myers, of Forsyth. A reception celebrating the life of Coach Myers will be held at from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, October 12, at Hart's Mortuary, Jones County Chapel, 307 Pecan Lane, Gray, Ga. 31032.
