Macon- Irving Lewis Cohen, 96, passed peacefully on Wednesday, January 5, 2010. Services will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at 10:30AM at Temple Beth Israel with Rabbi Larry Schlesinger officiating. Burial will be at 2:30PM at Riverdale Cemetery,Columbus, GA. Mr. Cohen was a member of Shearith Israel Synagogue in Columbus and Temple Beth Israel of Macon. He served in the mid-Pacific with the 173rd Battalion Army before attending OCS in Columbus, GA. Mr. Cohen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from City College of New York and attended Cooper Union School of Art. He was an accomplished and respected artist. He enjoyed imparting his knowledge to his many pupils who greatly admired him. Mr. Cohen was loved by children and was a walking encyclopedia on healthy eating and living. Mr. Cohen was predeceased by his wife of fifty-six years, Madelyn Besser Cohen. Mr. Cohen will be deeply missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Ina and Paul Buchanan of Dalton, GA; grandchildren, Rebecca and John Williamson of Birmingham, AL; Yonatan Allon of Haifa, Israel; great-grandson, Jack Williamson of Birmingham, AL; life partner and companion, Letty Kaplan of Macon, GA and Letty's children and grandchildren; and many nieces. He was adored and cherished by us all. He was a kind soul and true gentleman.
