Iris Neal Harrison Layton Mcginnis

Mrs. Iris Neal Harrison Layton McGinnis, age 92, of Rome, Georgia, formerly of Macon, passed away on Monday morning, September 2, 2013, at her residence. Mrs. McGinnis was born in Harrison, Georgia, on October 3, 1920, daughter of the late Joseph Ralph Harrison and the late Dola Claxton Harrison. She was also preceded in death by her first husband Thomas F. Layton in 1999, to whom she was married in 1941; by a grandson William Stanley Self in 1981; and by a brother Joseph Harrison in 1944. She was a graduate of Wrightsville High School in Wrightsville, Georgia. Mrs. McGinnis lived most of her adult life in Macon where she was an active member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church from 1947 until 2004 where she served as a Church Hostess and worked in the Preschool Program for many years. Mrs. McGinnis moved to Rome in 2004 to be close to her daughter. It was then she met and married James McGinnis on July 9, 2005. She was currently a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome. Mrs. McGinnis was an energetic and happy person. She loved to travel and lived life to the fullest. Survivors include her husband, James Millican McGinnis, Rome; her daughter, Mrs. Patricia Self, and her husband, Dr. Stanley Self, Rome; two grandsons, Gregory Thomas Self and his wife Christene of Atlanta, and Neal Jackson Self of Rome; four great-grandchildren, Layton, Cameron, Lauren, and Conner Self of Atlanta; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Layton; a brother-in-law, Cecil Layton; nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to thank Heyman Hospice and special caregiver Sharon Odom. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, at 2pm in the Chapel at the First Baptist Church of Rome. Dr. Joel Snider and Dr. Paul Camp will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013, at 4pm at the Harrison Baptist Church Cemetery in Harrison, Georgia. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:30pm until 2:30pm at Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon.
