Dr. Hyman Katz passed away on July 21, 2017, the day after his 101st birthday. He was born on July 20, 1916, in Ellenville, N.Y., the son of Sonia and Rabbi Louis Katz. He graduated from the University of Michigan and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Dr. Katz is survived by his wife Brenda Lipman Katz. They were together 29 years. He married his first wife Lillian Haskins in 1942. He is survived by his two sons, Richard (Mary) and Dr. Doug (Reeda) Katz, grandchildren Molly Katz, Annie Press (Chris), Ben Katz, Adam Katz (Shana), and Amy Wilensky (Michael), and four great granddaughters Lily, Sophie, Lyla, and Grace. Hy served in the U.S. Army in two wars. He was drafted before World War II began, rose to staff sergeant, was selected for OCS, and served as an artillery officer in Europe, participating in the Battle of the Bulge. His division was involved in the liberation of the Dachau and Buchenwald camps. After dental school, he volunteered to serve in Korea, where he was a medical officer in a MASH unit. He practiced dentistry in Macon for many years, and is fondly remembered by his patients. Dr. Hyman Katz was a dedicated dentist, opera lover and one of the last of the Greatest Generation. In 1965, he served as the president of Sha'arey Israel Synagogue in Macon. The family wants to thank Hy's friend and caregiver, Robyn Brown. The funeral will be private.
