Dr. Hugh Gibson passed away after a brief illness on October 25, 2017 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Miramar Beach, Florida surrounded by family. He was a Valentine baby, born in Albany, Georgia on February 14, 1936 to Walter and Marian Gibson. His mother passed away when he was twelve years old. He then came to Macon to live with his aunt and uncle. Hugh was an honor student at Lanier High School where he played basketball and achieved an officer's rank in the ROTC program. After graduating, he attended Mercer University, graduating in 3 years with honors with a degree in Biology. From Mercer, he was accepted and attended the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. It was here where he met his life partner and wife, Marian Atkins. From Augusta, Dr. Hugh Gibson returned to Macon to complete his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, achieving the position as chief resident at the Macon hospital now the Medical Center. Dr. Hugh Gibson and his wife then settled in Macon to build a family and raise their three children Hugh Jr, Lisa, and Lea. Hugh practiced first briefly at the Medical Center with most of his career at Coliseum Park Hospital. After 30 years of practice, Hugh retired due to health reasons. He continued to live in Macon until 2017. Dr. Gibson had a love for photography and sailing. He spent a great deal of his leisure time with his family sailing the Georgia coast with trips to Bahamas and Virgin Islands. In his later years, he focused on his love of photography and computers. He leveraged these two passions to create prints of both coastal and local land marks that where exhibited and sold locally. He was also a voracious reader of history, modern politics and philosophy. From medicine, to sailing, to photography to continued learning, he approached each with passion. He was a loving husband, supporting father, as well as, a supporting friend to those close to him.
