It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Helen Mason Weathers, a woman of boundless faith, energy, and intelligence. Funeral services will held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 30 at Vineville United Methodist Church with Dr. Jimmy Asbell officiating. The family visitation will follow the service.

Mrs. Weathers was born in Langdale, Alabama on July 2, 1934, to the late Karolena Zeiger Mason and Charles Edgar Mason. She married her high school sweetheart, Harold Coleman Weathers, on March 18, 1956, and they were married for 64 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, her beloved daughter, Kathryn Weathers Kelly; her brother, Charles Evan Mason; her nephew, Charles Thomas Mason, and her son-in-law, C. Edward Griffith, Jr.

Mrs. Weathers graduated from Valley High School in 1952 as Valedictorian of the senior class. She received a B.S. degree in Home Economics Education from Auburn University in 1956, and master’s and specialist’s degrees in education from the University of Georgia. She taught for 31 years in the public schools of Georgia and following retirement was an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia, Georgia College and State University, Mercer University, and Wesleyan College. She was inducted into numerous professional honor societies including Omicron Nu, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Delta Kappa where she served as president. She was voted Teacher of the Year three times by faculties and was Middle Grades Teacher of the Year in Clarke County, GA.

Mrs. Weathers was devoted to her church and her community wherever she lived and received many awards and honors for her religious and community involvement. At Vineville United Methodist she served on the Administrative Board, Council on Ministries and various committees. She was a member of the Webb Sunday School Class and frequently taught adult Sunday School classes where she was known for doing extensive research for Bible lessons. She sang in the Daybreak Choir and was a member of Bible Explorers UMW Circle. She was a founding member of the Wesley Glen Ministries Auxiliary where she served as secretary and president. She was also a founding member of the Macon Salvation Army Auxiliary.

Mrs. Weathers served on the Board of the Keep Macon/Bibb Beautiful Commission for over 35 years before becoming emeritus in 2023. As active board members, she and her husband frequently hosted international guests and dignitaries visiting Macon.

In 1988 she was named Macon Woman’s of the Year by Keep Macon/Bibb Beautiful Commission and in 2010 was honored as Georgia’s Woman of the Year by Keep Georgia Beautiful. She also was selected to receive the Carolyn Crayton Award in 2004 and was named a Gracious Lady of Georgia in 2002. She was named Volunteer of the Year for Wesley Glen Ministries in 2008 and twice was honored by her church’s UMW for her work in mission activities. In 2023, the KDLB Youth Award was named the Helen Weathers Youth Award.

Mrs. Weathers was devoted to her family with a steadfast unique relationship with each member. Left to cherish the memories are her daughter, Karol Weathers Griffith of Dublin; her son, Charles Harold Weathers (Millie) of St. Marys; her son-in-law Patrick Michael Kelly of Lagrange; her grandchildren, Patrick Michael Kelly, Jr. (Jamie); Clarence Edward Griffith, III; Kara Helen Kelly Brownell (Nick); Grayson Coleman Kelly (Amy); Coleman Evan Griffith; Matthew Kelly (Sara); Joseph Weathers Kelly (Hope); Kathryn Kelly Franks (Patrick); Annemarie Helen Weathers and Charles Harold Weathers, Jr. (Aimee); and her great-grandchildren, Patrick III, Emily, Charles, Anna Kathryn, Lucy, Jacob, Lily, Arthur, Margaret, Owen, Weathers, Dorothy, Rosemary, Ann-Coleman, Luke, Serenity. Also surviving is her niece Lisa Mason Patterson (Mark) of Valley, Alabama and many friends and relatives.

The service will begin with an interment at Riverside Cemetery for the family followed by a memorial service at the church. The family will greet guests following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that contributions be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204; Wesley Glen Ministries, 4580 N.
