Helen Minchew Childs Macon, GA Helen Minchew Childs passed away January 20, 2014 in Macon, Georgia. A celebration of her life will be held at 10AM on Saturday, January 25, 2014 in the chapel of Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola on Peake Road. Dr. Freddie Smith will officiate. The family will greet friends for 30 minutes following the chapel service. Graveside services will be held at 3PM in the Jordan Church Cemetery, Route 1, Waycross, Georgia (Dixie Union, GA). Helen was born on December 13, 1923 in Waycross, Georgia to the late J.J. and Iola Bennet Minchew. She graduated from Wacona High School in 1941. After two years in college at what is now Georgia Southern, she transferred to Perry Business School in Brunswick, Georgia. After business school, she was employed by Standard Oil, Gulf Oil, and Hercules Powder Company, where she retired after 35 years of service. At retirement, she and her husband, Curtis W. Childs, who predeceased her in 2009 after more than 50 years of marriage, bought a home on St. Simon Island. She was an active member for more than 50 years at First Baptist Church, Brunswick. Her most significant accomplishment was being a loving wife, and a very thoughtful and caring daughter to her widowed mother, sister and brothers. Her interest in the nieces and nephews in the family was well known. It was her joy and delight to cook special dishes for them. She was an outstanding baker of desserts. Helen was an avid walker and her partner was Kathy Dugger of St. Simon Island. She was always a friend to all people who knew her, especially those with special problems and needs. She was a wonderful listener and encourager. It was well known that Helen was a very hospitable, gracious, and caring person. In addition to her husband, Curtis, and parents, J.J. and Iola, Helen is predeceased by brothers, Dr. John E. Minchew and Verlon Minchew. She was also predeceased by infant brother, Jeffie Eldon Minchew. Helen is survived by her sister, Lucille Minchew Comish, with whom she made her home since her husband's illness and death; her brother, Harold R. Minchew of Savannah; sister-in-law, Sarah Minchew of Atlanta; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express sincere thanks and appreciation to her caregivers, especially Deborah B. Wilson and Jacquelyn Green, and Judy Wilson, RN and her dedicated staff at Hospice Advantage. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Brunswick, 708 Mansfield Street, Brunswick, Georgia 31520; or Hospice Advantage, 3902 Northside Drive, Suite B3, Macon, Georgia 31210; or the donor's favorite charity.
