Harriet Adams Newton

Mrs. Ralph George Newton Jr, age 89, died, July 23, 2018. She was born Harriet Dewitt Adams in Macon on July 20, 1929. She was the daughter of Ralph Adams and Elizabeth Riley Adams of Macon.

Mrs. Newton attended Wesleyan College and graduated from The Barmore School in New York City.

She was an active member of Ingleside Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a part of the Junior League of Macon, Macon Town Committee of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Town and Country Garden Club and the former Bibb County Medical Auxiliary. Mrs. Newton was also active in many other civic and community activities throughout the years.

Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Ralph George Newton, Jr and her sister Elizabeth Adams Stringfellow and her husband Horace. She is survived by two daughters, Harriet Newton Sams and her husband Kenneth Dorsey Sams, Clark Newton Young and her husband Dr. Edward Hotchkiss Young; five grandchildren, Dr. Ralph Newton Sams and his wife Allison, Katherine Sams, Kenneth Dunwody Sams and his wife Meridith, Edward Hotchkiss Young, Jr., Anna Blanche Young Pennington and her husband Brandon; five great grandchildren, Harriet Newton Russell, Ralph Newton Sams Jr., Caroline Elizabeth Sams, Kenneth Dunwoody Sams Jr., Clark Ella Pennington; niece, Elizabeth Stringfellow Spann and her husband Henry; nephew Horace Stringfellow IV and wife Cam; and sister-in-law Mrs. Milledge Clark Newton, nephew, Dr. Milledge Clark Newton, Jr. and his wife Roxanne; nieces, Jennifer Newton and Deanne Newton and her husband Sean Casey.

The family will greet friends at 777 Saint Andrews Drive, on Tuesday, July 24 from 4pm-7pm. The funeral service will take place Wednesday, July 25th, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Ingleside Baptist Church. Dr. Timothy McCoy, Dr. Mark Hudgins will officiate. Burial will be private in Riverside Cemetery.
