Gray

Harriet Roberts Jones Madison, 88, of Gray, GA passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.  The family will greet friends Sunday, June 5, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Hart’s Mortuary, Jones County Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 or the charity of your choice.

Daughter of the late Daniel Jette and Inez Roberts, Harriet was a graduate of Jones County High School and the University of Georgia with a double major.  She was a career teacher until her retirement.  During her working career, she obtained a master's degree from Mercer University.  After retirement, she began a second career in tree farming and enjoyed her work in planting, growing, and developing the land.  With help from skilled professionals in the field of forestry, she was able to obtain the award of Outstanding Forest Steward in Georgia’s Forest Stewardship Program.  Her work and this award were high points in her life.   Harriet was also an active member of the Jones County History and Heritage, Inc.  She took pride in working with others to preserve the heritage of the county. She was a member of Sunshine United Methodist Church in Round Oak, Georgia.

Harriet always encouraged people to live life, to travel, and to broaden their horizons.  In her early adult life, Harriet developed a love for travel when she visited cousins who were stationed on US Army bases in Germany in the 1950s and took the opportunity to visit much of Europe.  In her retirement years, she traveled around the globe to such places as Turkey, just a month after the 9/11 attacks, Egypt, Thailand, and Hong Kong.  She also visited Alaska three times and enjoyed trips to the American southwest and west.  At the age of 79, she traveled with friends to the Canadian Rockies.  The purpose of that trip was a moose hunt and involved riding horseback for 30 miles to get to the hunting camp.  Harriet was also a lifetime member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Harriet was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas Madison, Jr., sister, Inez Roberts Frazier, and a granddaughter, Karen Amanda McPherson.

Harriet is survived by son, Thomas Jones (Cindy) of Gray; daughter, Lori McPherson (Steve) of Augusta, Georgia; grandchildren, Brian Jones (Kelly) of Duluth, Georgia, Carolyn McPherson of Cumming, Georgia, and Wesley McPherson of Roswell, Georgia; nephew, Jette Frazier (Robin); great nephew, Randall Frazier (Lyndsey Johnson); great niece, Ramanda Denton (Frankie); great great niece, Aubrey Frazier; great great nephews, Landon and Dalton Califf, both of Gray; niece, Barbara Frazier Brake of Milledgeville, Georgia; long-time friend, Glenn Williams; and honorary grandchildren, Savannah Williams, Jackson Williams, Carson Williams, and John Williams, all of Round Oak, Georgia.
