Macon- Mrs. Harriet McKay Hazlehurst died Sunday, July 26, 2009. Her dearly loved fisherman/husband, Dr. William Derrel Hazlehurst, died in 2003 after a marriage lasting sixty-four short years. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert McKay of Macon, Mrs. Hazlehurst was predeceased by her brother, Albert Walters McKay and by her sister, Blythe Letcher McKay. Her granddaughter, Anne Marie Devlin, also predeceased her. At her death Mrs. Hazlehurst was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, having earlier in life been a member of First Presbyterian Church where her uncle and grandfather both served as ministers and where she was a life member of the Women of the Church. Described by all who met her as gracious, warm, beautiful, endearing and determined, our Ma was so funny she often woke herself from dreams laughing. Her three children survive her: Harriet Hazlehurst Wallace (Robert Edward Wallace), William Derrel Hazlehurst, Jr. (Louise Domingos Hazlehurst), and Blythe Hazlehurst Devlin (Robert Burke Devlin). She leaves six adored grandchildren who returned their Ma's love totally: Harriet "Hazle" Wallace Hamilton (Larry R. Hamilton), Christine Wallace Wilson (Joseph P. Wilson), Katherine Hazlehurst Powers (Jeffrey N. Powers), William Derrel Hazlehurst, III, Thomas Hazlehurst Devlin and William David Devlin and two great-granddaughters, McKay Louise Powers and Katherine Elizabeth Powers. She also leaves a little dog, Jessica, who was companion, comfort and great entertainment. As a loving, devoted mother she embraced not only her immediate family, but also that of her brother; his daughters and son, Russell McKay Glasheen (Charles R. Glasheen), Martha McKay Eubanks (Donald C. Eubanks) and Albert Walters McKay (Sally R. McKay) and their children and grandchildren. Mrs. Hazlehurst was able, in the last years of her life, to remain in her own home due to tender care from the gentle ladies who assisted her; Gladys McMullen, Amelia Hansford, LaTara Fowler, Tabatha Jackson, Angela McNeal, Marie Sherman, Almeta McMullen and Frances Williams. The family will welcome friends at 3270 Vista Circle Tuesday afternoon between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Memorials are requested to be made to the Macon Volunteer Clinic or the W. Derrel Hazlehurst Scholarship Fund at Mercer University School of Medicine. The memorial service and burial will be private. Online register is located at www.hartsmort.com.
