Grover Julian "Pop" Layfield

Grover Julian "Pop" Layfield, 95, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 7, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Mabel White Memorial Baptist Church with The Reverend Joe McDaniel and Dr. Lee Sheppard officiating. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park. Family will greet friends between 5:00PM-7:00PM Thursday, February 9, 2017 in the chapel of Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mabel White Memorial Baptist Church, 1415 Bass Road, Macon, Georgia 31210, Macon Rescue Mission, 774 Hazel Street, Macon, Georgia 31201, or Salvation Army, PO Box 13386, Macon, Georgia 31208. Pop was the youngest of 12 children of the late Peter and Mamie Simpson Layfield. He was a retired letter carrier with the United States Postal Service and was a veteran of the United States Army. He served his country during World War II and saw action at Guadalcanal and New Guinea. Pop served in Battery D, 528th, Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion. Among his military citations and decorations, Pop received two Bronze Stars for his service. Pop, having served his country for five years and ten months, received an Honorable Discharge on August 25, 1945 and returned home to Milledgeville. Pop was a member of Mabel White Memorial Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and an Usher for fifty years. He was a member of the Faith Bible Class, Senior Friends, and Golden Agers. Pop is predeceased by his parents, wife Grace Arnold Layfield and wife Florence Stanfill Layfield. Pop is survived by his daughters, Julia L. Duke of Frisco, Texas and Jan K. Odom (Mike) of Macon; son, Emory H. Kitchens (Latrishia) of Macon; three grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and an astronomical number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Magnolia Manor and Pop's caring and loving sitters, Ellen Martin, Bessie Rozier, Valerie Mason, Valerie Norwood, Cynthia Chambliss, Vivian McClinton, Tameka Pollard, Karen Ervin and Connie Leghorn.
