Grace Meriam Brown Martin, 93, of Macon, Georgia, died Wednesday, February 6, 2013. Funeral services and a Celebration of her life will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, February 9, at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, Macon. Burial will follow in Luthersville, Georgia Cemetery. The family will greet friends before the service beginning at 12:30 in the Church parlor. Grace was born in Milledgeville, Georgia and grew up in Macon. She graduated from Miller High School and Georgia State College for Women. She taught school in the Bibb Mill School in Columbus for two years before returning to Macon. She married George Martin, Jr. when he returned from WWII where he had spent 18 months as a POW in Germany. While in Macon she was active at Mulberry Street Church assisting with many children and youth activities as a teacher and chaperone. She also was a Girl Scout leader. She worked with the Macon Water Works as a bookkeeper before she moved to Columbus. In Columbus she worked as school librarian and was an active member of St. Luke UMC. Among her many activities at St. Luke she served as volunteer Church Librarian for several years. She was active in the United Methodist Women serving as circle leader and president and received the Quiet Disciple award. Her involvement in the church also included being a faithful member of the Prayer Chain ministry, member and officer of the Shaw Sunday School Class, member of the Administrative Board, Meals on Wheels, lay member to the South Georgia Annual Conference and many other activities. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and a member emeritus of Muscogee County Retired Educators. She was a member of many community clubs as well. She returned to Macon in 2009 and once again became involved at Mulberry Street UMC in both the Paula Motes and Trinity Circles; a volunteer with the Gazelle ministry and the Clothing Closet ministry; and a member of the Solomon Fellowship Class. She also was a member and volunteer with the Friends of the Library. She was predeceased by her husband, George Martin, Jr. and her sister, Leslie Brown DeLong. She is survived by her son, Rev. Tommy (Flo) Martin of Macon; daughters, Mary Lee Martin and Linda Grace Martin, both of Richmond, Virginia; grandchildren, Rev. Thomas (Leslie) Martin of Atlanta, Matt Martin of Bainbridge, and Grace Wigal of Richmond; great-grandson, William Davis Martin of Atlanta; several nieces and nephews.
