Gloria Ann Maddox Stiles was born in Forsyth, Georgia on June 26, 1927, to Bernard Oliver Maddox and Minnie Pearl Burke Maddox. She attended elementary school in Forsyth and graduated from Miller High School for Girls in 1945, while living and working at the Methodist Home for Children.
In 1949, she married Joseph E. Stiles, Jr. of Macon, a WWII Army Air Corps pilot, thus embarking on a journey in the newly created Air Force. Over the next 30 years, she served with distinction on the Boards of the Officers Wives Club and the PTA, and actively volunteered in the schools of her six children. In 1973, they retired and settled in Macon, where she served as a dedicated caregiver to many close relatives.
Gloria was a long-standing member of Riverside Methodist Church in Macon, where she participated in Sunday School and organized community activities. She lived each day in perfect grace and dignity. A supportive force and a cornerstone of her family, Gloria dedicated much of her life to supporting her husband during his career with the United States Air Force. Her strength and care extended beyond her own family to the many Air Force families that they encountered throughout the years.
Gloria was an avid reader, loved to play bridge, and enjoyed traveling, stopping to see interesting sights along the way. She was gifted with her hands and heart – she was a great cook, gardener, wise advisor, patient caregiver, animal lover, and she always put others before herself.
She will be remembered lovingly by her sister, Beverly Appleby; her six children, Joseph E. Stiles III (Jane); Maj Richard R. Stiles, US Army (retired) (Alison); Janice A. Stiles Nordeck (Mark, deceased); Col Charles W. Stiles, USAF (retired) (Vickie); Kenneth A. Stiles; and Stacey C. Stiles Allison (Craig); grandchildren James Stiles (Allyson); Donald Stiles (Tamie); Jennifer Stiles; Keith Giddens, Jr.; Brad Stiles (Jenn); Jayme Stiles; Kelly Stiles (Michael Graham); Craig Allison, Jr. (Rhylynn); and Alec Allison; and fifteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph E. Stiles, Jr.; parents Bernard Oliver Maddox and Minnie Pearl Burke Maddox, sisters Shirley Kuffrey and Barbara Maddox, and granddaughter Mary Jo Stiles.
“Your beauty should … be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”– 1 Peter 3:3-4
