George was born on September 19,1936 in Macon, Georgia as one of ten children to the late John Everett Palmer, Sr. and Ida Kate Grant Palmer. He graduated from Lanier Senior High School for Boys in 1954 and attended Mercer University. George served in the U.S. Army 1955-1957 and was thankful for his chance to serve his country. After school and the military, he joined his father’s business, Palmer Tire Company, in 1957 and served the company faithfully for over 40 years. The company grew considerably and George assumed important roles in the company’s growth. He served for many years as the branch manager in Macon, Albany, Vidalia, Orlando and Jacksonville. When he returned to Macon he served as corporate sales manager before assuming the role as Vice President of Palmer Industries.
Everyone that ever met George would describe him as a very outgoing and positive person. Those who knew him well remember his sincere desire to help anyone in need and his perpetual willingness to do good deeds for others without any thought of receiving anything in return. His family was at all times his highest priority and he was dearly loved by them all. He passionately pursued everything in which he got involved, such as scuba diving and water skiing, when he was younger, and being actively involved in various church related endeavors, as he grew older.
George is survived by the love of his life, Frances McDonald Palmer. who he met while living in Vidalia, GA, and married on November 10, 1963. While being married for fifty-nine (59) happy and blessed years they raised three children: Kathy Palmer Williams, Gary Palmer, and Debi Palmer Owens, all of whom predeceased him in death.
