George Erwin Jones, Jr. age 85 died in Macon, Bibb County, GA Memorial services will be held at 11:00AM Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church with the Reverends Tommy Mason, Tommy Perkins, and Sam Lamback officiating. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet friends Monday, April 20, 2015 from 5:00-7:00PM at Hart's at the Cupola. George was born February 10, 1930, in Sparta Hancock County, GA. He was the only child of the late Eva Frances Johnson Jones and George E. Jones, Sr. He was a 1947 graduate of Sparta High School where he lettered in three sports. He received his undergraduate degree and Masters Degree from Mercer University and the Administrative Specialist in Education Degree from the University of Georgia. He came to the Bibb County School System in the fall 1955. He taught math, English, and history at Lanier Senior High School in Macon in the 1950's and 1960's and was assigned to be the Administrative Athletic Director of all sports by then Principal A.J. Swann. He was the golf coach at Lanier and his team won the Southeastern District Tournament. He later served as principal of Alexander IV Elementary School and Dr. John H. Heard Elementary School in Bibb County. George was a self-taught musician playing trumpet, valve trombone, bass, and guitar. He played with many local bands in and around Macon and Mercer and on other college campuses. He was a member of the Mercer Phi Delta Theta washboard band with four other Phi Delta Theta members. That group of musicians won the Horace Heidt Talent Competition show to go overseas and perform for the USO. He completed 30 years in the Bibb County School System and enjoyed a life long appreciation of music and sports. George was a member of the Macon Exchange Club and a volunteer with the Macon Symphony Orchestra. He was a Bon Hommes Alumni. He was a member of Mulberry Street Methodist Church where he served on the Administrative Board and president of the W.G. Solomon Bible Class. As President of that Sunday School class, he was the leader of the Easter Sunrise service on Coleman Hill for many years. He was presently a member of the Joy Class. Mr. Jones was preceded by a son, William Jefferson "Jeff" Jones. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Elaine Wilder Jones, son and daughter-in-law Jameson "Jamey" B. Jones and Heather Roland Jones, four grandchildren, Kaitlynn Victoria Jones, Hannah Denise Jones, Ashland Nicole Jones, and Justin Roland Jones. He is also survived by several cousins, Alec Long, Santee, Georgia, Ann Aycock York, Sally B. Aycock Hogg, Jimmy Aycock, and Billy Aycock, Betty Lou Spires Lain, and David "Corky" Spires all of Sumter, South Carolina.
