Macon, GA-George Jackson Foster, renowned for his distinctive announcer's voice and oratorical skills, was probably best known for his annual recitation of "It's Friday, But Sunday's Coming" during the Good Friday services every spring at Mabel White Memorial Baptist Church. After a lengthy illness, on Memorial Day, May 31, 2010 at the age of 80, "Sunday Morning" arrived for George and he went to be with his Lord. A celebration service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Mabel White Memorial Baptist Church. Reverend Joe McDaniel and Reverend Donald M. Reid will officiate. George was born in Akron, Ohio to the late George Washington Foster and Hannah Mary Collier Foster. He served his country in the United States Army in the Korean Conflict. George was a graduate of Columbia Teachers College in New York City. He taught at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Missouri and was Director of Mass Media Programs at Ft. Valley State University, Ft. Valley, Georgia. Among his many and varied credentials, he was the first black correspondent for the CBS Network News. He was based in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco. George was a professional photographer, working in photo journalism for VISTA. He was passionate about children's education and worked for the Children's Television Company as a contributing writer for Sesame Street and The Electric Company. George was instrumental in the establishment of the television broadcast center at Howard University, WHMM Channel 32. He was the local coordinator of Macon Reads, whose goal is to improve the literacy of young children. George was a member and a Deacon of Mabel White Memorial Baptist Church. He was also a member of the choir and the Faith Builders' Sunday School Class. George is survived by sons Grant (Catherine Broadbent) Foster of Salt Lake City, Utah and Todd Foster of Macon, and sister-in-law Kit Howard of Buffalo, New York.
