Frederic Clayton “Clay” Wiggins Jr (45) passed away Saturday, November 1st. Clay was more than just a father, son, friend, individual; he was a beacon of humility, kindness, and unwavering dedication.
Born on February 26, 1980, in Augusta, Georgia, to Beverly and Freddie Wiggins. Clay grew up in Warrenton, Georgia where he lived with his parents, grandparents and sister. Growing up he learned the value of hard work and integrity. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. Clay started his career as a dispatcher with the Jones County Sheriff's Office. He joined the DA's office part-time before moving to a full-time position in 2022. Clay actively worked for the DA’s office up until this fall.
Clay met his beloved wife Heather later in life and the two were happily married in 2017. The two met at a local consignment sale in Gray and with the help of some of his investigation skills the rest became history. Clay used to tell everyone how much joy and happiness Heather and her daughters, Micah Mae and Emma, brought into his life. Heather and Clay would go on to grow their family officially adopting Micah Mae and Emma and adding three more children: Warren, Everly, and Hannah. As a father, his gentle guidance and unwavering support shaped the lives of his children. He worked hard to instill in them the same values of hard work and compassion that he so deeply cherished.
In February 2024 Clay was diagnosed with Stage 4 gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma cancer. Clay would continue to surpass the odds with his strength and dedication during his fight. Even attending the birth of their daughter, Hannah, in March 2024, the same day he started chemo.
Beyond his family, he was a beloved figure in the community. The Georgia District Attorneys Association named him Investigator of the Year in 2025. His humility and genuine kindness endeared him to friends and colleagues alike. He had the unique ability to make everyone feel special, always taking the time to listen and offer words of encouragement. His laughter and warmth were a comforting presence, and his absence will be profoundly felt by all who had the privilege to know him.
Clay is survived by his wife Heather and their five children: Micah Mae, Emma, Warren, Everly and Hannah. His parents Beverly (Dye) and Freddie Wiggins, his sister Meghan and half-sister Misti Brewer. Clay was preceded in death by his grandparents Margie Wiggins, ED Wiggins Jr, Elton & Betty Dye, and his great uncle Warren “Catfish” deBeaugrine.
