Fred S. Grigsby Sr. passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00PM, Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia 31210 with a reception following immediately after. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Bass United Methodist Church, 4062 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31210. Fred was born on March 21, 1936 in Ned Kentucky to the late Vista and Alton Grigsby. He proudly served in the United States Army in Tokyo Japan prior to receiving his Bachelor in Business with a major in accounting from Union College in 1960. Immediately upon graduation, Fred started his 32 year career with the United States Social Security Administration. He quickly rose through the ranks and served in numerous position across the Southeast and even the US Virgin Islands. He received 11 superior performance awards along with the Commissioner Citation, which is the highest award with Social Security. He pioneered Social Security's move into telecom services for benefit applications while also being responsible for the creation of Social Security's Work Specialization program which was adopted nationwide and still in effect. After retirement in 1995, Fred founded Government Benefit Information Services, where he served as president until his death. The organization has help more than 20,000 disabled people qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits. Fred was a member of Bass United Methodist Church and was always community minded and served many years in the Jaycees, VFW, American Legion and Lions Club. He also served on the board for United Way of Central Georgia. In 1974, he was honored as a Kentucky Colonel. Over the years, Fred also enhanced his love of woodworking by owning a picture framing and an architectural millwork company, but nothing beat his first loves, which were golf and watching Kentucky basketball. Fred was predeceased by his sister, Mary Lou Butcher of Dayton, Ohio. Fred is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha S. Grigsby; son, Fred S. Grigsby Jr. of Forsyth, Georgia; daughter, Melinda Grigsby Nolden and son-in-law, Rodger W. Nolden of Charlotte, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Sidney and Logan Grigsby, Jackson and Hudson Nolden; two sisters, Edith Campbell of Hazard, Kentucky and Hilda Sue Davis of Hazard, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.
