Frances Callaway McCommon passed away peacefully on April 13, 2018. Mrs. McCommon was born in Tunnel Hill, Georgia on July 11, 1926 to the late Edith Calhoun Callaway and William Willis Callaway. A premature baby born at home, she was not expected to live and defied the odds to live ninety-one and a half years. The hills of North Georgia were always very special to her. She graduated from Dalton High School and Wesleyan College, where she remained an active alumna for her entire life. At Wesleyan, she achieved national recognition in women's archery. After graduating, she married Robert Lee McCommon, Jr. They were married for fifty-seven wonderful years until his death in 2005. She was predeceased by her sister, Virginia Beckmann and her brothers, Pat and Joe Callaway. Fran was an active member of the Macon community, faithfully serving St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the Rivoli Garden Club, the Hilandale Garden Club, the Morning Music Club, the History Club of Macon, the Howard Community Club, and Idle Hour Country Club. An accomplished needle worker, she enjoyed her involvement with the Quilter's Guild. A lifelong learner, Fran maintained a loving heart and open mind. She and Bob graciously welcomed many newcomers to Macon, entertaining the international students at Wesleyan for many years. Particularly dear to her heart was Ruth Rusch and her family of Switzerland. Ruth has remained in close contact with the McCommon family for over 50 years after living with them as an exchange student. Fran is survived by her sons and daughters: Robert Lee McCommon, III and his wife, Sarah; Claire McCommon Smith and her husband, Boone; Ginny McCommon McKay and her husband, Dick; Dr. George William McCommon and his wife, Disa. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ginny Smith Younce (Webb), Boone Smith IV (Amanda), Callaway McKay, Claire McKay Loehr (Ryan), Dixon McKay, and William McCommon. She delighted in her six great-grandchildren, Claire and Edie Younce, George and Bridges Smith, and Hillyer and Win Loehr. The family wishes to thank Janice Gail and all the caregivers for their loving care of Mrs. McCommon.
