Erika K. Underwood

Erika K. Underwood, 84, of Macon, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2021, at Vineville Baptist Church, with Dr. Richard Kremer officiating. Burial will be held at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville, Georgia.

Erika graduated from Wagner College in 1959, and then later attended Georgia State University, where she earned a Master of Education degree. Teaching chemistry was her passion and students were her joy. Her greatest delight was her family and she loved spending time with them. Erika was musically inclined, playing various instruments throughout her life, including piano, viola, and dulcimer. She especially loved playing the handbells and singing in the church choir. She was a creative individual, crocheting everything from baby blankets to stuffed animals, and she was a wonderful seamstress. Erika was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star for 49 years, serving locally and state-wide in various offices.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, James Edward Underwood; daughters: Frieda Underwood, of Macon, Georgia, Lynne Jones (Tom), of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Susan Whitaker (Jimmy), of San Angelo, Texas, and Lori Griffin (Roy), of Jasper, Georgia; and grandchildren: Travis Griffin and Olivia Griffin, of Jasper, Georgia, Jacob Whitaker, of San Angelo, Texas, and Catherine Jones, Elizabeth Jones, Natalie Jones, and Meredith Jones, all of Hershey, Pennsylvania.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathryn Underwood; grandson, Noah Whitaker; parents, Jacob Phillip Knierim and Gertrud Aweh Knierim; and brother, Otto Knierim.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Erika’s honor to Vineville Baptist Church at 2591 Vineville Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31204.
