Emerson Womble Mcrae

Emerson Womble McRae, of Macon, Georgia passed away Monday, December 28, 2009. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 2, 2010 in the chapel of Hart's Mortuary, Cherry Street at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in the Stubbs Cemetery in Abbeville, GA at 2:00PM. Reverend John Kinser will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family may be visited at 738 Glencove Drive, Macon, Ga. 31204. Born January 9, 1915 in Abbeville, GA. He is the son of Waldo Emerson McRae and Minnie Alice Womble McRae. He graduated from Abbeville High School. He later enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Air Corps. Upon completion of basic training, he was assigned to the Air Corps Band at Maxwell Field in Montgomery, AL. He played the trumpet and E flat tuba. As the war progressed, he sought oversees assignment and served in England and South Italy. There he was a cartographer transposing aerial photographs into military maps. During an assignment in Meriden, CN, he met his wife Helen at a rail station. Helen traveled to Tampa, FL to marry him and they wed at the chapel of McDill Air Base. After the war, they lived in Abbeville, Atlanta and settled in Macon. Patricia Lynn McRae Miles was born in Hawkinsville, GA and Ginny McRae Von Leu Ballou was born in Macon, GA. Mr. McRae worked for Perfection Stove and later was self-employed in distributing furniture for Mack's Home Furnishing in Macon. He was a member of Vineville Presbyterian Church and later First Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. His wife Helen Dorothy Biesak McRae preceded him in death as has his oldest daughter Patricia Miles and sister Jewell Carolyn McRae Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Ginny Ballou and three grandchildren, Alexander Miles, Isaac Von Leu, and Rachelle Von Leu. Womble attended UGA; he was the oldest living member of the Original Dixie Red Coat Band. He graduated from Mercer, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
