Elizabeth March Timberlake, age 87, ordinary professor emerita of social work at The Catholic University of America, died peacefully in her home on February 15, 2025.
A Bethesda, MD resident, Dr. Timberlake was born in Thomasville, GA, the daughter of Joe and Elizabeth Durant Timberlake. She graduated from Miller High School in Macon, GA where she was an honor student and editor-in-chief of the school annual. She earned her BA (1960) from Duke University where she was a member and officer of Phi Mu Sorority and served as treasurer of the student association sponsoring international students.
After earning her MSW degree from Tulane University (1962), she practiced clinical social work with children and families at Family Service and the Georgia Mental Health Institute in Atlanta, GA. Upon earning her doctorate (Ph. D 1974) in social work at The Catholic University of America, Dr. Timberlake joined their faculty. She specialized in teaching graduate courses in clinical social work treatment of children and families, philosophical issues in knowledge development, clinical model development, and multimethod research.
In retirement, she developed an interest in the C & O Canal, hiked major portions of its towpath from Georgetown up to Cumberland, and co-authored two coffee table photography books of Canal sights and scenes. She is survived by her brother, Joe Timberlake III of Macon, GA; her nieces Beth Timberlake Oropeza of Gainesville, GA; Margaret Timberlake Larson of Orange County, CA; and nephew Bob Timberlake of Columbus, GA and their families.
Services will be held in Macon, Georgia on Thursday, February 27, 2025: Graveside will be private at Riverside Cemetery & Conservancy. A memorial service will be held at Hart’s at the Cupola at 4:00 PM.
