Elizabeth Jane Allen of Annapolis, Maryland, died on March 23, 2018, in Macon, Georgia. The daughter of Charles Hadley Allen, M.D., and Elizabeth Roberts Allen, Jane was born in Atlanta on January 25, 1946 and grew up as a skilled horsewoman in Bremen, Georgia. Jane attended Gulf Park College for Women in Mississippi and graduated from Vanderbilt University with majors in Russian history and language. Following graduation, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, received her commission, and served for 12 years with the Corps assigned to military intelligence. Following her military service, Jane moved to Maryland where she earned her doctorate degree in psychology while simultaneously teaching women to sail in the Chesapeake Bay area. After completing her degree, Jane worked as a school counselor in Maryland prior to joining the Joint Special Operations Command. In this capacity, she deployed to Iraq and to Afghanistan before returning to practice clinical psychology, working at rape crisis centers and in women's trauma programs in the Washington, DC area. Always an advocate for women's empowerment and safety, Jane became a sexual assault response coordinator for the Air Force Wing at Fort Meade in Maryland. She retired from federal service in March 2012 but continued serving others as a volunteer, teaching children's classes at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Annapolis and accompanying supply missions to Turkey where she worked with children in the Syrian refugee camps. During her military career, Jane earned her pilot's license and enjoyed flying, sailing, and riding horses throughout her life. Jane was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her brother, William Hadley Allen (Susan) in Macon, GA, and by her nieces, Mary Elizabeth Horton (John), Kathleen Hughes Danner (Robert III), nephew, James Danny Hughes (Jennifer), and seven great-nieces and nephews.
