Macon- E. Rex Elder, age 86, of 779 Nottingham Drive, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011. Services will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 2:00PM in the chapel of Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, with Judge Taylor Phillips officiating. The family will greet friends before the service from 1:00-2:00PM and a reception will follow. Burial is private. Family may be contacted at 779 Nottingham Drive. Mr. Elder was born in Macon, Georgia on May 29, 1924 and has lived here all his life. He graduated from Lanier High School in Georgia, Alabama Business College, and Georgia Military College. He was elected to Macon City Council for three terms and served under ten mayors from 1959 to 2004. He was elected President of City Council in Mayor Ronnie Thompson's administration and appointed Aviation Director for Macon's airports from January 1969 until January 2004. Mr. Elder served our country in the United States Army during World War II with General George Patton and also General Mark Clark. He was a member of Vineville Baptist Church. He was an avid tennis player and President of Macon Lawn Tennis Association.
Survivors include his wife, Dot Elder of Macon; daughters, Terry Miller (Bob) of Marietta, and Jan Young (Glenn) of Athens; sister, Carolyn James (Norbert) of Macon; grandchild, Everett Young of Chapel Hill, NC; and his cats, Morris and Rascal, his devoted companions.
