It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Robert J. “Bob” Moon. Bob was born and raised in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest son of John and Grace Moon, and older brother to Nancy and Rick Moon. He graduated from Carbondale High School in 1960. He attended Eastern University in St. David’s, Pennsylvania (class of 1964), where he met his wife, Deloras Trimmer Moon. Bob and Deloras married in 1966 and were partners in all things for 59 years.
Bob’s career was dedicated to science and medicine. He completed a PhD in Microbiology at Bryn Mawr College in 1969. He was an Associate Professor of Microbiology at Michigan State University from 1968 to 1982, including a research fellowship at Harvard University in 1972, and an NIH research fellowship at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington DC in 1981-82. Bob joined the newly formed Mercer University School of Medicine in 1982 in the Basic Sciences Department and retired as the Associate Dean of the Medical School in 2009. After retiring from Mercer, he continued his contributions to medical education on the Board of Directors of Trinity Medical School at St. Vincents and the Grenadines.
Bob was an active member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and an adult Sunday school teacher. He served as the Treasurer for the church and for St. Andrews Montessori School. He was a fan of all Mercer University athletic programs and was active in the civic affairs of Jones County. Family and friends will remember afternoons spent on the golf course and summers spent at the cottage on Cottrell Lake.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, John and Grace Moon (Carbondale), and brother Rick Moon (Philadelphia). He is survived by his wife Deloras; son Rob Moon (Abi); daughter Allison Duncan (Will); sister Nancy Cramer (Walt); sister-in-law, Kay Moon; and nieces Amy Cramer; Susan Wezorak (John); and Sherry Bonn.
Services will be held at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 501 Bass Road, Macon, 31210. The family will receive visitors at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2025. A memorial service will follow. A private interment of his ashes at Canaan Corners Cemetery in Waymart, Pennsylvania, will be held at a later date.
The family asks that a memorial gift be made in honor of Dr. Moon to Mercer University School of Medicine Annual Fund or St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Hart’s Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.
