Dorothy Washington Howington

Dorothy Washington Howington, 98, of 194 Pierce Avenue, Macon, Georgia died Monday, February 23, 2015. She was born in Richmond County, near Augusta, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late William Josh Washington and the late Clara B. Washington Hallman. She attended the Richmond County Schools and graduated from Tubman School for Girls in Augusta, Georgia. Mrs. Howington had lived in or near Macon since 1939. Mrs. Howington worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company for six years and was in the real estate business for several years. She was a secretary for Dixie Dental Laboratory for fifteen years until she retired in 1976. For a year or so, she wrote for the Wilkinson County paper under the title "The Poets' Corner". She was the author of a book of poems entitled "World Reflections" that was published in 1994. Four copies of her book are in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. They asked for permission to translate her book into foreign languages. Mrs. Howington was a member of Vineville Baptist Church, the Grace Sunday School Class, the XYZ Senior Group and while at Vineville Baptist Church, she was a charter member of the "Vineville Baptist Legacy Society". She worked in the Cassette Tape and Visitation Ministry to Shut-Ins at Tattnall Square Baptist Church while she was a member there. She was a former member of Highland Hills Baptist Church and co-sponsored the Tape and Visitation Program for several years there. Also, while there, she taught junior aged boys' and girls' Sunday School classes. Mrs. Howington was the wife of the late David Anderson Howington of Macon. She was predeceased by five sisters, Catherine Newman and Jo Mertin of Augusta, Vivian Aderhold of Atlanta, Iris Gibson of Johnston, South Carolina and Lois Corley of Macon. Mrs. Howington is survived by her daughter, Deryl Amoss (Danny) of Blue Ridge; son, Tony Howington (Brenda) of Macon; daughter, Dianne Shalibo (Kent) of Toccoa; grandchildren, Becky Drain (Bryan) of Houston, Texas, Dotty Jones (Bill) of Milledgeville, Emily Cisco (Mark) of Byron, Bert Hatcher (Joana) of Jacksonville, Florida, Andy Howington (Michelle) of Commerce, Gary Wood of Astoria, New York, Grant Wood (Laura) of Roswell, Toby Amoss of Atlanta, Wendy Howington of Macon; several great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Vineville Baptist Church on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 11:00AM with Dr. Richard Kremer officiating. Music will be provided by Larry and Quinette Scott. Burial will be at Macon Memorial Park. The family may be contacted at the residence of Tony and Brenda Howington, 222 Rutledge Way, Macon, Georgia and will greet friends at Hart's Mortury, 765 Cherry Street, on Wednesday from 5:00PM until 7:00PM.
