Dorothy Jane "D.J." Wilson McArthur, born April 4, 1925 in Albany, Georgia passed away Friday, May 31, 2013. Services will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 3:00PM at Riverside United Methodist Church. Burial will be private. The family will greet friends at the church on Sunday from 2:00PM until 3:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Riverside United Methodist Church, 735 Pierce Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31204. Mrs. McArthur grew up in Albany, Georgia and graduated from Albany High School ('41). She attended Stephens College, Emory University, and graduated from Wesleyan Conservatory with a BFA in Radio, Speech, and Drama ('46). D.J. worked for Rich's in Atlanta narrating an educational radio series and fashion shows. She then moved to Camilla, Georgia where she worked as a speech instructor. Heeding the call of the theater, D.J. toured the United States with the Barter Theater Players out of Abington, Virginia. Desiring to enter the field of social work, D.J. completed master's study at Columbia University before returning to work as a Child Welfare Worker in Albany, Ga.
In Albany, while attending an exercise class at the YMCA, she met William "Bill" McArthur who was the Physical Director. They were married in 1951 at the home place of her grandparents, Jo-Su-Li Farms, near Colquitt, Ga. The couple later moved to Macon.
In 1962, Dorothy Jane became a Child Welfare Supervisor in Bibb County. In 1968, she was appointed Director of the Bibb County Family and Children Services. In 1973, she was named Area Network Director for the DHR. During this time, Dorothy helped to develop the Bibb County Meals on Wheels program. In 1977, Dorothy was hired as Program Manager for the Office of Aging. In 1983, she won the Elsie Alvis Award presented annually by the Georgia Gerontology Association for Outstanding Professional in Gerontology. Dorothy retired in 1987.
Dorothy was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church. She was a member of numerous professional, community, and civic organizations. She had a variety of hobbies, but travel is what she enjoyed most.
Survivors: sons, Steve McArthur (Cisty) and Neil McArthur (Whitney) of Macon; granddaughters, Brooke Davis (Kyle), Kelly Jungberg (Jason), Anna McArthur-Taylor, Virginia McArthur and Elizabeth McArthur; grandson, Alex McArthur; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Caroline Davis, Daniel and William Jungberg, and Ava Taylor.
Mrs. McArthur was predeceased by her husband, William Reid McArthur, and her parents, Oscar Stephen and Bernice Cross Wilson.
