Dorothy Brooks Blizzard

Dorothy Brooks Blizzard, age 80, died on Thursday, February 5, 2009, at the Oaks at Peake in Macon.

Dorothy was born in Jacksonville, Florida on January 7, 1929. She was the youngest of three children born to Beulah Wooten Brooks and James Dexter Brooks, Sr. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Dexter Brooks, Jr., and her sister Eudelle Brooks Barrett.

She moved to Macon in 1930 and grew up here. She attended Virgil Powers Elementary School where she was at one time the Bibb County spelling bee champion. She attended A. L. Miller High School for Girls. She also worked for Southern Bell Telephone Company in Macon.

She married Charles Gordon Blizzard in 1947 and became a homemaker, rearing five children. They celebrated sixty years of marriage together until his death on March 15, 2007.

She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Macon where she was active in their senior adult ministry known as The Precious Stones.

In recent years she fought a valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease. She resided at Beacon Point Assisted Living and Belair Assisted Living in Macon for the past six years. Just recently she was a patient at the Heartland Hospice House. Her family will always be grateful for the loving care she received during this time from the caring staff of these facilities.

Dorothy Blizzard is survived by five children: Dr. Charles Michael Blizzard (Judy Thomas); Olan Albert Blizzard (Katherine Wood); Charlynne Blizzard Barnes (Wayne Barnes); William Randelle Blizzard (Donna Myers); and Gordon Kimberly Blizzard, all of Macon.

She is survived by twelve grandchildren: Christie Blizzard Brinson (David) of Statesboro; Chad Matthew Blizzard (Jill) of Jesup; Jeffrey Albert Blizzard (Lesley) of Forsyth; Christopher Neil Blizzard (Doryanna) of McDonough; Charla Dorice Barnes of Macon; Eric Stephen Blizzard of Macon; John Matthew Barnes of Juliette; Jason Randelle Blizzard of Statesboro; Stephen Paul Blizzard of Macon; Rebekah Blizzard Clough (Mark) of Lizella; Justin Kimberly Blizzard of Macon; and Rachel Kimberlyn Blizzard of Macon.

She is survived by nine great grandchildren; Brianna Blizzard, Chandler Brinson, Zachary Blizzard, Jacob Blizzard, Emily Blizzard, Chloe Brinson, Mattie Joy Blizzard, Daniel Clough, And Riley Clough. Her tenth great grandchild is expected to be born in Jesup on February 11.

The family will greet friends at Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Saturday evening from 6pm to 8pm.

Her funeral service will be held at 3 pm Sunday at Hart's at the Cupola. Her body will lie in state for one hour before the service. The service will be conducted by Dr. Charles Michael Blizzard. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park. The pallbearers will be her grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dorothy's name to the Building Fund of Cornerstone Baptist Church, P. O. Box 3296, Macon, Georgia 31205-3296.
