Dorothy Louise Barnes

Dorothy Shelton Barnes entered into rest on October 3, 2011. She was born in St Louis, Missouri on January 26, 1929, and grew up in Webster Groves, Missouri graduating from Grinnell College in Iowa in 1951. She made her home in Portland, Oregon from 1957 until moving to Georgia in 2008. Dorothy retired from the Portland Public School System in 1999 with 20 years of service. Her love of gardening and cooking were rivaled only by her passion of hiking in the Great Northwest with the El Grupo Sin Nombre Hiking group she co-founded and actively participated in for over 25 years. She was of the Presbyterian faith. She is survived by her children Michael Barnes (Sally) of Knoxville TN, Mark Barnes of Portland OR, Leah Baum (Bob) of Surprise AZ, Joshua Barnes (Deborah Ann) of Warner Robins GA, and Jessica Barnes (Oscar) of Buenos Aires, Argentina as well as 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, Max Porter and Georgia Wadsworth Shelton, and her sister, Mary Maxine Schuler. A special thanks to the staff of Flint River Memory Care in Macon for surrounding her with love. A memorial will be held in Portland at a later date.
