Dorothy Bailey Cook of Macon passed away on Monday, July 23, 2018 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia after a brief but serious illness. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 27 at Wesleyan Drive Baptist Church, 939 Wesleyan Drive, Macon, Georgia 31210. Rev. Mike Gibbs will be officiating with a burial immediately following at Riverside Cemetery, Macon. After the brief interment, the church will host a covered dish luncheon for anyone who would like to return and enjoy the fellowship. Visitation will be Thursday, July 26 from 3:30 to 5:30 at Harts at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Friends of the Cannonball House, 856 Mulberry Street, Macon, Georgia 31201.
Dorothy Ann Bailey was born on October 19, 1946 in Washington, DC, to the late Thomas Barclay Bailey, Jr. and India Maxine Cox Bailey of Oxon Hill, Prince George’s County, Maryland. She was the granddaughter of the late Odom Augustus and India Pearl Matheny Cox of Crystal Springs, Copiah County, Mississippi, and the late Thomas Barclay Bailey, Sr. and Marion E. Murphy Bailey of Washington, DC.
Dorothy graduated from Oxon Hill High School in 1964 and from Mercer University in 1968 with a major in mathematics. She then attended Vanderbilt University and earned a master’s degree in mathematics. She married Timothy Michael “Mike” Cook on June 17, 1969 in Oxon Hill, Maryland. After Mike returned from the Army they moved back to Macon, residing at 5435 Riverside Drive.
She was employed as a math teacher at Windsor Academy for a few years in the 1970s and then worked from home as the office manager of Mike Cook Company, Inc., a dump truck and heavy equipment service that is currently in its 45th year of continuous operation. After retiring from Mike Cook Company, she became a docent at two local historic homes, The Cannonball House and the Sidney Lanier Cottage, which allowed her to combine her love of teaching and history.
She was a long-time member of Wesleyan Drive Baptist Church. She was also a member of Historic Macon and the Women’s Club. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Ft. Hawkins Ch. #285, O.E.S, and was currently a member of Macon Ch. #345, O.E.S. She was also a past president of Sidney Lanier Chapter 25, UDC and was currently serving as the treasurer.
After interment, everyone is invited to bring a covered dish and join the family for lunch at Wesleyan Drive Baptist Church.
