Doris Kate Williams died on March 26, 2014 in her adopted hometown of Macon, Georgia.
Miss Williams moved from Houston, Texas to Macon more than 60 years ago and was associated with Dr. Milford B. Hatcher, a local surgeon, as a registered nurse and Physician’s Assistant for forty-three years. She was one of the first three certified Physician Assistants in Georgia.
She assisted Dr. Hatcher in the development of the Department of Surgery at Mercer University School of Medicine, with which she was associated for six years. She was given an Award of Appreciation by the board of Governors of the Medical School and also by the students and received the first Bunnie Chichester Award of Achievement by the Bibb County American Cancer Society.
Miss Williams was born in Fort Worth, Texas, the daughter of the late Joseph Preston Williams and Ethel Mae Decker Williams. She was a graduate of the University of Houston-Memorial Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and the Southwestern Business University and also attended the Houston Conservatory of Music.
She was active in American Cancer Society affairs, both on the local and state levels, and was a life member of the Board of Directors of the Bibb Unit. Miss Williams was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Middle Georgia Historical Society, the American Nurses Association, the Georgia Nurses Association, and the Georgia Physicians Assistant Association. She was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon.
Miss Williams enjoyed a long, happy life. She loved her work, her family and friends, traveling, music, literature, gardening, and the companionship of a number of much-cherished dogs and cats. She is survived by 13 nieces and nephews, as well as a number of great nieces and nephews.
Miss Williams was laid to rest on March 31 in Houston alongside her parents and other members of her family.
A memorial service in Miss Williams’ honor will be held at 11:00 on Thursday, April 10 at First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon. Reverend Scott Dickison and Dr. Robert Setzer will officiate. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations be made to the the First Baptist Church of Christ of Macon or to a charity of your choice.
