DONALD THOMPSON

MACON, GA Don Thompson passed away Friday, November 2, 2018. Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church on Monday, November 5, 2018 at 11:0O AM with Rev. Ben Wells officiating. A reception in the Parish Hall will be held following the service. Mr. Thompson is retired from the Macon Water Authority.
Don was the son of Caleb Fitzgerald and Leda Thompson. He grew up in New York City, joined the Army at a young age during WWII. He served his 3 years and then returned and finished his education. He also served for 17 years as a member of the Air National Guard and retired from there as Master Sergeant with 20 years of military service. He received his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University majoring in Agriculture. He worked In Oklahoma and South Dakota for the U. S. Department of Agriculture. He moved to New Hampshire and joined the State Department of Agriculture. He transferred to the New Hampshire Water and Waste Water Pollution Control Department. He attended the University of New Hampshire and received his Graduate Degree in Civil Engineering. He then joined Metcalf and Eddy Engineering Consultants overseeing the construction, training and startup of Water and Waste Water Treatment Plants. In 1982 he was transferred to the Atlanta, GA office of Metcalf and Eddy. He enjoyed traveling with the company, but thought a stay at home job would be a good change. In 1985 he was hired by the Macon Water Authority as Director of Water and Wastewater facilities. He belonged to several professional organizations in his long working career. He also served on the Environmental Advisory Board for Robins Air Force Base and served for 10 years as the Community Co-Chair of the Board.
Don enjoyed camping, hiking, attending Road Scholar programs and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, children Darrell Thompson (Susan) Norcross, GA, Dwayne Thompson, Concord, NH, Dawn Strawn (Donald), Theresa, NY, Michael Tasker (Debbie), Farmington, NH, Doreen Prescott (Howard), Milford, NH, Bonnie Wilson, Fairhope, AL, Dori Michaels (Clint), Covington, GA; Grandchildren: Adrienne Paris, (Chuck) Gabriel Copp (Nicole), Hilary Petrash (Don), Merideth Burbridge (David) , Elisabeth Tasker, JD Wilson, Hunter Wilson, Jacob Michaels, Bryce Michaels, and 6 great-grandchildren.
