Don King

June 3, 1931 — August 13, 2013

Don King, 82, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 11:00AM at Vineville United Methodist Church with Dr. Jimmy R. Asbell, Jr. officiating. Burial will be private. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31204. Don served in Korea with the United States Army. After leaving the service, he graduated from Mercer University and began his radio career shortly thereafter at WBML. Known for his slogan "people people," Don became the station's first program director using many creative promotions to cater to a younger audience. In 1956, Don set a record with a 125 hour live remote broadcast. After leaving WBML, Don appeared on local television with Channel 41. In 1982, he returned to radio at WNEX before spending the last eight years of his radio career at WMAZ. In 2009 Don was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. Don is survived by his son, Donald King, Jr. of Ann Arbor, Michigan; daughter, Kathleen Bass (Gene) of Macon; grandchildren, Jamie Collins, Jack, Will and Bella Bass; brother, Lynwood King of New York.
