Daphne "Dee" White Pittman

May 16, 1938 — July 25, 2024

Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Daphne “Dee” Pittman was born in Jacksonville, Alabama, May 16, 1938. She was a loving mother to her "four beautiful kids," as she would always refer to them. She instilled strong values in her children which has served them well. Her children are Lynn (Jim) Wright of Macon, Crystal (David) Kirksey of Butler, James (Tina) Hunter of Covington, and Randy (Sandra) Hunter of Cochran. "Our mother was the strongest woman we've ever known. When it came to her children and family, she was a fighter and loyal advocate." Sadly, Dee lost her beautiful blond haired, blue-eyed boy, Jamie, February 2017.

After living in Michigan, Florida, Alabama, and various counties in Georgia, Dee moved with her children to Conyers, Georgia, where she met the love of her life: Robert Pittman. In 1968 Bob united in marriage with Dee and her four children.

Dee was a talented artist. She painted alongside her friend and teacher, the renowned Bob Ross. Her landscapes grace the homes of most of her friends and family. Dee not only taught painting classes but also flower arranging for Michaels Arts and Crafts Stores. Beginning as a small child, Dee always had a great love for nature. She would lie on her back and study the clouds seeing all types of interesting creatures and designs in their white, fluffy beauty. She was always searching for interesting or beautiful rocks and leaves. Her grandchildren were always in awe of her beautifully decorated Christmas trees. They would gather around to look at the amazing handmade ornaments made from seashells or bird nests that she had gathered. Dee was an avid gardener. As she moved from place to place, continuity was maintained by taking a plant or cutting to the new residence. A visit with her often ended with one going home with rooted cuttings or a flower arrangement.

Dee had wide and varied work experiences. She was one of the first female machinists in Michigan working for Ford Motor Company. Later, she became a personal assistant to jeweler and diamond broker E.J. Booth, relative to John Wilkes Booth. Later, Dee served as ward secretary in hospitals in Morgan, Washington, and Upson counties. Dee and Bob operated the 19/80 Rest Stop and the Crackerland Country Store in Taylor County for many years. After moving to Warm Springs, Georgia, Daphne operated her own gift shop allowing her to express her creativity and love of people as she made her customers feel at home in her shop. After Bob's retirement from the US Postal service, Bob and Dee traveled extensively throughout the world visiting such places as the Great Wall in China to the humid jungles of Devil's Island in French Guiana. They eventually settled in Panama City Beach, Florida, for fifteen years before returning to where their life together began: Conyers, GA. Dee was a member at Belmont Baptist in Conyers, Georgia.

Dee and Bob were grandparents to Leslie (Steve) Wright Lowtwait, Cory (Brittany) Wright; and Amy (Carl) Kirksey Thompson, Megan (Steve) Kirksey Catchings; and Jason (Lyndsey) Hunter, Tabb (Miranda) Hunter, and Brandon (Heather) Hunter, and Nikki Hunter Johnson.

They were further blessed with numerous great-grandchildren. The grandchildren will always remember their family tradition after opening Christmas gifts: volleys of gift wrap paper flying back and forth until Grandmother said it was time to clean up!

Daphne was the daughter of Raymond and Ruth White and big "Sis" to ten brothers and sisters. James (Amenda) White, Wanda Rose (Fred) Rowell, Earlene Kaci (Richard) McDaniel, Ellen (Ray) Cobb, Randall White, Ronnie (Faye) White, Raydale (Mattie) White, Frank (Ruby) White, Tim (Tammy) White, and Lisa (Jerry) Blackston. Daphne was a much loved aunt to her nieces and nephews. As matriarch of a large and extended family, she was often called upon for her strength and wisdom.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 29, 2024, in the Chapel of Hart’s at the Cupola. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
