Daniel Dexter Bacon, Sr. Jan. 5, 1928 --- June 18, 2016 Daniel Bacon was born in Tattnall County on January 5, 1928 to Marshall and Elizabeth Kicklighter Bacon. He graduated from Glennville High School in 1944 and worked in the shipyards of Savannah until he was 17 and old enough to join his two brothers already serving to protect our country in WWII. He served in the Navy in the South Pacific until the end of the war on the Bunker Hill returning wounded soldiers back to the U.S. Upon returning home he utilized the GI bill graduating from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in 1948 and the University of Georgia in 1950 with a BS degree in Agriculture with a minor in Agronomy. He took a job teaching in Surrency, GA where he met the love of his life, Rebecca Jean Murphy. They were married sixty-five years! After teaching Agriculture to returning war veterans, he worked for the USDA in the Soil Conservation Service throughout several Georgia counties. In 1964 he took a job with the United States Forest Service at the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina mapping soils. Upon completing his Master of Agriculture from N.C. State University in 1968, he then moved his family to Atlanta where he became the Southeast Regional Hydrologist for the US Forest Service. After retiring in 1984, he opened a consulting firm, Soil Surveys, and practiced until 2001. Dan had a passion for the outdoors including hunting, fishing and gardening which he shared with his children and grandchildren. Dan was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Madge Burdette, Elizabeth Strickland, and Velma Purvis; and brothers, M.D. and Joe Kress Bacon. He is survived by his wife, Jean Bacon; sister, Annette Moore; and children, Becky Rosson-Bonner (spouse, Cleve Bonner) and Dexter Bacon, San Antonio (spouse, Diane Riden Bacon); grandchildren, Liz Hill (spouse, Jonathan Hill), Tommy Rosson, and Brian Bacon, San Antonio, (spouse, Kristin Bacon); Great-grandchildren, Mary Evelyn and Henry Hill; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be between 6:00-8:00PM on Tuesday, June 21st at Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia 31210. Funeral Services will be 2:00PM on Wednesday, June 22nd at Hart's at the Cupola with the Reverend Glenn Haskins officiating. Burial will be on 11:00AM on Thursday, June 23rd at the Jesup City Cemetary. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Tattnall Baptist Church in the memory of Dan Bacon.
