Macon- Commander Maurice W. Rea, United States Navy, Retired, 85, died Monday, July 26, 2010. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at 10:00AM at Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville, Georgia. The family may be contacted at the residence of Vince and Elaine Rea, 159 Red Fox Run. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, New York 10018. Commander Rea, a graduate of Oregon State College, was a loving husband and father. He was a career Naval officer, serving from the Invasion of Normandy until the Vietnam War. Commander Rea served as an aide for Governor Vandiver of Georgia during the John Kennedy Inauguration. He then worked at the Pentagon in satellite communications and after retiring, he assisted the Fairfax County Police Department in designing their communications system. Commander Rea served in support of the Department of Defense operations during the Apollo XI mission, the first moon landing flight in July 1969. Commander Rea is survived by his wife of sixty-four years, Betty Ann Rea of Macon; son and daughter-in-law, Vince and Elaine Rea of Macon. Register online at www.hartsmort.com.
