Services for Colonel (Ret) Joseph H. Jones will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, Macon, Georgia with interment at 2:00 pm at the Andersonville National Cemetery. Colonel Jones, of Smyrna, GA, age 94, died Thursday, April 26, 2018. Colonel Jones was the youngest son of the late Thomas Quaite Jones and Julia Vallie Marsh. He was a native of Greenville, SC., and grew up in Gainesville, GA. He was a graduate of Presbyterian College. He was a graduate of the US Army OCS at Fort Knox KY., The US Army Infantry School, Advanced Course, at Fort Benning, GA., and the US Army Command and General Staff College. His awards and decorations include The Combat Infantryman's Badge, The Legion of Merit, The Bronze Star Medal, The Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Joint Services Commendation Medal, The Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, The United Nations Service Medal, The Korean Service Medal and The Korean War Service Medal. Colonel Jones was inducted into The Infantry Center OCS Hall of Fame at Fort Benning in 1985. Since November 2015, he and his wife, Iris, had resided in Smyrna, GA to be near their daughter. He had been a resident of Macon since 1969 at which time he was assigned by the Army as Professor of Military Science, Mercer University. He retired from active duty with the Army in 1970. After retirement from active duty with the Army he was associated with Fickling and Walker Company as a salesman and Associate Broker until 1986. He was a member of the JOY Sunday School Class, the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, and The Kiwanis Club of Macon. For many years before his death he was an active Volunteer as a Rules and Tournament Official with GA State Golf Association and GA Section PGA. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Joseph Thomas Jones in 1980, a sister Maurine J. Ellis in 1997, and a brother James A. Jones in 2014. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Iris Shannon Jones, a daughter and son-in-law Katherine Ann Jones Hoskins(Chuck), a grandson Benjamin G. Hoskins(Trish) of Roswell, GA, two granddaughters, Elizabeth H. Lee(Josh) of Brookhaven, GA and Julia H. Sears(Joseph) of San Diego, CA, and a brother Thomas Q. Jones Jr.(Dianne) of Horseshoe Bay, TX. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am-11:00 am in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a contribution to The Hamilton Holt Kiwanis Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 1054, Macon 31202 or a charity of the donor's choice.
