Macon

Claude Eugene Cramer, “Gene,” peacefully passed on February 17th, 2024, at the age of 89. Gene was born in Monroe, Georgia on October 31, 1934, to Robert Toombs Cramer and Mamie Cheek Cramer. He graduated from Lanier Senior High School for Boys of Macon, Georgia in 1952 and graduated from Southern Technical Institute in Chamblee with a degree in Electronic Theory. From 1954-56, he served in the U.S Army at Fort Bliss in Texas and Fort Totten in New York. Upon settling back in Macon, Gene worked for WRAFB as an electronics technician where he obtained both his private pilot as well as his commercial pilots license. He later retired from Durr-Fillauer Medical after a successful career in sales.

Gene’s passions were vast and varied as he delighted in being in the great outdoors of Georgia. Whether it be hunting, fishing, or canoeing the Ocmulgee River or the Okefenokee Swamp, he was always glad to be outdoors. His hobbies also included metallurgy, woodworking, and the collection of antique steam engines from across the United States. His other passions also included the restoration, collection, and riding of American, British, German and Italian motorcycles and scooters. In his lifetime, he restored over 50 motorcycles. His greatest enjoyment came from his family. His 63 year marriage to his wife, Shelby, and their daughter, Kristyleigh, involved enjoying the Georgia Bulldogs play in Athens, trips to the beach and enjoying their time together at their home on Lake Sinclair. His happiest endeavor was in the role of being “Grandaddy” to his three grandchildren: Kyndall, Clay, and John Robert.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mamie Cramer, as well as his grandson, Clarence Rogers McKemie IV, “Clay.” He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shelby Martin Cramer, his daughter, Kristyleigh Cramer McKemie, his grandchildren Kyndall Cramer McKemie of Macon, and his grandson, John Robert Martin McKemie of Washington, DC. He is additionally survived by many nieces and nephews.
