Charlie Edward Cloaninger, Jr., a devoted family man and longtime resident of Macon, Georgia, was born May 24, 1942, and passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, surrounded by those he loved. He was 83 years old.
Raised in Columbia, South Carolina, Charlie was the only son of Charlie and Helen Cloaninger. He had fond memories of joining cousins, aunts, and uncles on Horrell Hill and attending Lebanon United Methodist Church with them during his visits. He formed lifelong memories as a student at Dreher High School, where he served as a class officer and played football. He cherished his time at Dreher and proudly attended many reunions, including his 50th.
Charlie graduated from Clemson College in 1964 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. During his time there, he served as a football manager for all four years under Coach Frank Howard and earned a Block C Letterman Award. He was also highly involved with the YMCA and student government. While at Clemson, Charlie received an ROTC commission in the US Army. He continued his studies at the University of Georgia, earning a Master’s Degree in Counseling, and later completed his Doctorate in Higher Education Administration at The Ohio State University. It was in Columbus, Ohio, that he met Linda Midkiff, the love of his life. They were married on October 12, 1968.
For the first two years of their marriage, Charlie was on active duty at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, Indiana, working with allied military officers from around the world. In 1970, Charlie and Linda relocated to Macon, where he became the second Dean of Students at Macon Junior College. Over a distinguished 30 year career, culminating in his role as Vice President of Student Affairs, Charlie was known for his steadfast commitment to students and his belief in the power of education to change lives.
After retiring from Macon State College, Charlie served as Director of Operations for the International Cherry Blossom Festival for three years. Once he completed his professional career, he enjoyed traveling and buying antiques with Linda.
Charlie’s dedication to service extended far beyond his professional life. A proud member of Kiwanis for over 40 years, he held several positions including President of the West Macon chapter, Lt. Governor, and Outstanding Member in 1989, 1996, and 2017. His Army service earned him the rank of Colonel and the prestigious Legion of Merit Award, the highest peacetime honor bestowed by the US Army. He was the President of the Bibb-Jones County Unit of the American Cancer Society, as well as the Middle Georgia Area Phi Delta Kappa. He was also a faithful and active member of Mulberry United Methodist Church and served on numerous committees and boards.
Charlie’s biggest joy was spending time with his family. He treasured his five grandchildren, who lovingly called him “Poppy.” Whether taking them on beach trips, mountain adventures, tractor rides, or celebrating Christmas in Macon, he created lasting memories for his family.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linda Midkiff Cloaninger; his son Charlie Edward Cloaninger III (Debbie); his daughter Elizabeth Cloaninger Putnam (Joe); and his beloved grandchildren: Charlie Edward Cloaninger IV, Beatrice Ann Cloaninger, Lillian Weill Cloaninger, Mitchell Worcester Putnam, and Anne Elizabeth Putnam; and other extended family members.
The family would like to thank the staff and care team of Harrington House at Carlye for their excellent care and support.
