Charles Deming Jones

MACON - Charles Deming Jones, 91, died on Thursday, January 24, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Christ Episcopal Church, with Reverend Harriette Simmons officiating. Burial will be private in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday at Hart's at the Cupola from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 582 Walnut Street, Macon, GA 31201 or the Community Foundation Macon Rotary Fund, 277 MLK Jr. Boulevard, Suite 303, Macon, GA 31201. Mr. Jones was born on April 27, 1921 in Montgomery, Alabama, the son of the late Frances Deming Jones and the late Charles Alfred Jones. He grew up in Evergreen, Alabama, where he was an Eagle Scout. Mr. Jones received his B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Auburn University in 1942. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and was given the nickname of "Hot Dog". Upon graduation from Auburn University, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant by the United States Army on June 11, 1942. During his four years of service in World War II, he served as Aide De Camp to Major General John C. Persons, the commanding general of the 31st Infantry (Dixie) Division. After returning from the Pacific he was in charge of field artillery at Camp Wheeler in Macon, GA. He was discharged March of 1946 with the rank of captain. Mr. Jones was the general manager of Sam S. Chandler Insurance Agency for more than 25 years. He served as President of the GA Association of Mutual Insurance Agents and was on the agents' advisory board of the Utica Mutual Insurance Company. He served as president of the Macon SAE Alumni Association. Mr. Jones was a member of the Rotary Club of Macon, serving on its board of directors and as President. He was a Paul Harris fellow of Rotary International, as well as a Will Watt fellow of the Georgia Rotary Student Program. Mr. Jones enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and dancing. He was member of Christ Episcopal Church, Idle Hour Golf and Country Club, and the United States Closed Golf Association. Mr. Jones is survived by two daughters, Chandler Jones Pike, Macon, GA and Frances Jones Hardeman, Macon, GA, grandchildren Julia Pike Cochran, Peachtree City, GA, Daniel Rutland Pike, Madison, GA, Laura Deming Hardeman, Auburn, AL, Claiborne Whitfield Hardeman, Richmond, VA and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Doris Chandler Jones.
