Charleene Kitchens, 81, of Macon, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2023. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Hart’s Chapel at the Cupola, with Dr. Charles Michael Blizzard officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church, at 6324 Peake Road, Macon, GA 31210.
Charleene was born in Macon on July 13, 1941, to the late Charlie Hattaway and Alice Leola Hattaway. She attended A.L. Miller High School until 1958. She worked at Newberry’s downtown on the corner of Cherry and 3rd Street. Later she worked at Piggly Wiggly and Kroger as a cake decorator, and then GA Market House as a florist. She was a caregiver for her mother, Leola “Granny” Hattaway.
Charleene was a longtime member of 2nd Baptist Church and attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. At her death, she was a faithful member of Cornerstone Baptist Church at the Cupola. She was also a charter member of the “Wild Wicked Widow Women,” consisting of Charleene, Gaye Hattaway, Laura Honeycutt, Judy Heath, and Frances Wilder. She loved to bake and was known for her famous coconut cake. More than anything, she loved her family and her furbabies, Petey, Bubba, Lady, and Biscuit.
In addition to her parents, Charleene was preceded in death by her husband John Clark Kitchens, Jr.; son, John Clark Kitchens, III; sister, Sandra Jean Strong; and brother, Chuck “Skippy” Hattaway.
Charleene will be lovingly remembered by her granddaughter, Kimberly Bailey (Nathan) of Winder, Georgia; great-grandchildren, Katelynn, Logan, and Branson Bailey, all of Winder, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Opal Kitchens of Duluth, Georgia; sister-in-law, Gaye Hattaway of Macon, Georgia; brother-in-law, Ralph Strong of Macon, Georgia; nieces and nephews: Terri Brown of Macon, Georgia, Lisa Livery (Michael) of Macon, Georgia, Tracy Hattaway of Macon, Georgia, Mike Mathes of Byron, Georgia, and Brian Strong of Macon, Georgia; great nieces and nephews, Bailey Hattaway, Hunter Hunnicutt (Tyler), and Alli Mathes, all of Macon, Georgia; great great-niece, Jersey Hunnicutt of Macon, Georgia; and a host of other family members and friends, especially Lora Williams and her family.
