Cecil Roscoe Godfrey passed away on August 23, 2016 in LaGrange Georgia. He was born October 29, 1923 in Macon, Georgia. He was loved by everyone whose path he crossed. His gentle spirit and kind nature was a blessing to all. He was a loving father, devoted husband and adored by his family. Cecil attended Whittle Elementary School where he met his future wife. He graduated from Lanier High School for boys in June 1941 and was employed by Western Union until December of 1941. He also attended Georgia-Alabama Business School. Cecil enlisted in the United Sates Navy Reserves (active) on January 16, 1942 at the Federal building in Macon, Georgia On February 7, 1942 he reported to NOB, Norfolk, VA where he completed "Boot Camp" and then completed gunnery school at Little Creek, VA, where he was then assigned to the U.S. Navy Armed Guard. He served in gunnery crews aboard freighters and two tankers. In September 1945, he was transferred to Comservron 10 and sailed to China and Korea aboard an Army transport. At Inchon, Korea he was assigned to the USS Guam (CB2) and returned to the United States. He was discharged from active duty at Jacksonville, FL on December 18, 1945 with the rank of Coxswain. When he returned home from WWII, Cecil was employed by Dun and Bradstreet in Macon GA. He married his childhood sweetheart, Barbara Marie Pell, on August 25, 1946 and was happily married for over 60 years. On October 11, 1948 he was employed by the Macon Gas Company (Atlanta Gas Light Company). He transferred to Sandersville, GA in November 1953 as Chief Clerk. In September 1962 he transferred to the Griffin, GA office as Supervisor. In June of 1966 he transferred to Atlanta GA, as Supervisor of out-of-town accounts. Cecil retired from the Atlanta Gas Light Company in May 1986 with over 37 years of service. On February 26, 1952 Cecil re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve (inactive) in Macon, GA. He served in various units in Macon, Atlanta, and Marietta. His awards included the America Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Word War II Victory Medal, Naval Reserve Meritorious Service W/Four Stars, Armed Forces Reserve Navy Medal W/2 Hour Glasses and the Navy Achievement Medal. During his reserve time he completed twenty-nine correspondence courses and advanced to Master Chief Yeoman. He retired in October 1983 with over 35 years' service. On April 26, 1982, he was a nominee as one of the candidates for the Governor's Reserve Outstanding Military Citizens of Georgia Award. Cecil received a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Senate April 12, 2008 for Armed Guard Service. He was a member of the America Legion, Fleet Reserve Association, Navy Enlisted Reserve Association, U.S. Memorial Foundation and the U.S. Navy Armed Veterans of WWII. He served on the Board of the Mutual Savings Credit Union (AGL Co.) for nine years and was President for three. He served on the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Chapter of Data Processing Management Association for six years and served as Secretary and Vice President. While in Sandersville/Tennille area, he helped organize the Sandersville Presbyterian Church and was a Charter member. He served the church as Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Elder and Clerk of the Session. Cecil was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Pell Godfrey (2007), his brother Alva Godfrey (2008), his mother Lilla May Godfrey (1983) and father Roscoe Alva Godfrey (1972). He is survived by his one son Roscoe Alva Godfrey II of Charlotte , NC, two daughters Martha Cerie Godfrey of LaGrange, GA and Barbara Marie Davis of Smyrna GA, seven Grandchildren, eleven Great-Grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Sunday August 28, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Hart's Mortuary at 675 Cherry Street Macon Georgia. The Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Monday August 29,2016 at 11:00 a.m. with burial following at Riverside Cemetery.
