Caryl Lorraine Branan died at her home after a long illness on March 29, 2018. Born in Augusta, Georgia on September 17, 1946, she was raised in Macon by her grandparents and mother. At Miller High School, she enjoyed sports, excelling in ping pong and badminton. A faithful Christian, Caryl attended First Baptist Church, where she met her husband of 52 years. Jim and Caryl were married at the church on October 7, 1966. Their daughter, Tammy Branan was born while Jim served in the Army. Caryl completed Mercer University receiving a specialized degree in the social and psychological care of the dying in 1982. She was the first oncology social worker at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. While there, she was instrumental in beginning the volunteer Hospice Care; and submitted the protocol for the first cancer center at the MCCG, which, was implemented after her medical retirement in 1987. Caryl was a great cook. She and Jim enjoyed their home and yard. When able, Caryl took pleasure in picking up sticks and pine cones and watching the forest animals. Several dogs and cats became close friends while she was limited to the home. Caryl was a very beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Jim; daughter, Tammy; granddaughter, Mally; two sisters, Faye and Raye Coleman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Johnny and Polly Branan. Services will be private.
