Carter "Mac" Stout

Carter McRae Stout, 89, known to his friends and family as ‘Mac', passed away on June 15, 2017. The family will greet friends at Hart's Mortuary, 765 Cherry St., Macon on Friday, June 16 from 7 to 9 PM. Following a family graveside service Saturday, a service will be held at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, 719 Mulberry St., at 11 AM on Saturday, June 17, 2017. The Reverends Jimmy Towson and Creede Hinshaw will be officiating. Mac was born in McRae, GA, son of the late Carter W. & Mildred McRae Stout. The family lived in McRae until 1936, when his father accepted a teaching position in Tennessee, at what is now, Memphis State University. Following his father's illness and death in 1942, Mac, his brother Bob and their mother returned to McRae. They moved into the family home on College Street together with his uncle Daniel Murphy McRae, his wife Frank and their son Murphy (whom Mac regarded as a brother). Mac graduated from McRae High School in 1945, attended North Georgia College for two years, and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1949. He participated in ROTC at North Georgia and UGA, and upon graduation, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Reserve. He resigned from the Reserves in 1961 with the rank of Captain. In September 1949, he began his career at the Citizens and Southern National Bank (C&S) in Macon. In 1951, while serving in the Army Reserve, he was called to active duty and served in the Korean War. While in Korea in 1952-1953, he served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, as Charlie Company Commander in the 17th Regiment and as commander of Battalion Headquarters Company during the final battle for Pork Chop Hill. During his service in Korea, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, two bronze service stars, the Purple Heart, and the Silver Star. After discharge from active duty in 1953, he returned to Macon and resumed his career at C&S Bank. In 1961, he transferred to Athens where he served as Trust Officer. In 1970 he returned to Macon, where he served as Head of the Trust Department. He remained with C&S Bank until his retirement as a Senior Vice President at the end of 1989. Mac enjoyed many community activities including Boys Club of Athens, the Athens Housing Authority, Community Chest of Athens, United Way of Macon, Shield Club of Macon, Kiwanis Club of Macon, and the Macon Housing Authority. For these organizations, he served as either Chairman or President. Mac was actively involved in his church, both in Athens and Macon. At First United Methodist Church of Athens, he served as a member of the Finance Committee and Chairman of the Administrative Board. At Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Macon, he served on various committees, and he was Chairman of the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees. Mac was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Melba Martin Stout, his brother, Robert Sydney Stout, brothers-in-law; Franklin Heule, Ralph Martin & Billy Lowe, sister-in-law; Maxine Pound; and niece, Lucie Offerle. Mac is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law; Robert McRae Stout (Cathy) of LaGrange, GA and Larry Martin Stout (Teresa) of Tifton, GA, five grandchildren; Amanda Stout Mallory (Matt), Victoria Stout Bennett (Dallas), Wade McRae Stout (Katie), Robert Martin Stout (Hope) & Angela Stout Threeths (Jahan), six great-grandchildren; Payton & Carter Bennett, Jackson, Mattie & McRae Mallory, and Olin Stout, sisters-in-law; Agnes Heule, Christine Lowe & Ann Stout, one brother-in-law; Tom Pound, many beloved nieces & nephews, and his very special friend and companion, Charlotte Nolan of Macon.
