Carroll Carter passed away at his home on Sunday afternoon, May 10, 2015. He was born May 24, 1927 in Appling County, Georgia to Atticus George Haygood Carter and Lizzie Lynn Carter. He grew up on the family farm with his brother Francis and sister Hazel. He attended one- room Hopewell School through 5th grade, and graduated from Baxley High School the week he turned 16. He worked in the shipyard in Brunswick until he could join the Navy at 17. He served two years in the South Pacific from June, 1944 until June, 1946. He attended college on the GI bill and received his Bachelor in Civil Engineering from Auburn in 1950. After working for deGolian Steel in Atlanta, he came to Macon in March, 1953 to work with Chris R. Sheridan & Company. During almost five decades with the company, he worked with many talented people on a large variety of projects and enjoyed a very satisfying career. He became active in the Associated General Contractors (AGC) and served as president of the Georgia chapter. He also spent more than 30 years in the Naval Reserve unit in Macon and retired as a Commander in 1987. He gave freely of his time and talents at Riverside United Methodist Church. He served Riverside in many capacities over the years and enjoyed the wonderful people that served the church alongside him. On September 5, 1953, he married Mamie Jean Williams. Jean survives him, as do their three daughters and nine grandchildren. Daughters are Susan (Terry) Blackwell of Moncks Corner, South Carolina and their children Molly, Thomas (wife Jennifer) and Carter; also Nancy (Rusty) Mitchell and their children Duncan and Carter of Macon; also Cathy (Todd) Blonshine of Cary, North Carolina and their children Anna (husband Josh VandenEnde), Mary (husband Taylor Boone), William and Elliot. Visitation will be at Riverside United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 14th from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Funeral services will be at Riverside UMC on Friday, May 15th at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Hopewell UMC Cemetery in Baxley Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to Riverside United Methodist Church, 735 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204 or to The Methodist Home, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
