Carolyn Gibson Phelps

August 16, 1909 — February 8, 2009

Macon- Carolyn Gibson Phelps, 99, of Macon, died Sunday, February 8, 2009. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Friday, February 13, 2009 at Riverside Cemetery. A lifelong resident of Macon, Carolyn graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan College in 1929 and went on to teach high school mathematics for 31 years, her class sizes averaging over 50 students. Carolyn was the daughter of the late Harriet Wilder and Harry Aurelius Gibson of Macon and was the youngest of five children. She was also predeceased by her three brothers, Harry, Eugene, and Willis Gibson of Macon and her sister, Mary Maude Oppen of Savannah. Carolyn was married for 30 years to the late Mr. J. MacLeod Phelps who was employed in the commercial construction business in Macon for many years. They had lunch together every day. Carolyn and Mac were devoted to their niece and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. H. Bullard Harris, Jr. of Savannah and their children, Henry B. Harris, III, Helen H. Sherman of Atlanta, and Carl E. Harris of Paducah, Kentucky and her eight great-great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Phelps was a longtime member of Vineville United Methodist Church where she was the person with the longest continuous membership. She was active in the Edmund F. Cook Sunday School class and the Morning Music Club. "T", as she was affectionately known to her nieces and nephews, was also a member of the Vineville Garden Club, the Magna Charta Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Daughters of the American Colonists. In her younger days she was quite the dancer and throughout her life loved to garden and play cards and bingo. She will long be remembered by her family and friends for her engaging personality, sharp wit, and terrific sense of humor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204 or to Little Carnegie of the South, 1954 Forsyth Street, Macon, GA 31201.
