Carla Douthit Dodd

Carla Douthit Dodd died peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2024. Daughter of the late Carl and Jerry Douthit, Carla was born November 1, 1944, in Albany, GA, and moved to Macon, GA when she was five. She graduated from A.L. Miller High School in 1962 and attended Emory University where she was a member of ADPi sorority. Carla studied abroad at Sorbonne University (Paris) for a year and returned to graduate from Mercer University with her B.A. in English.  After graduation she taught school at McEvoy Junior High School in Macon, and was married to Roger “Mike” Dodd July 15, 1967.

Carla and Mike moved several times during their 30-year marriage, and Carla loved her many friends in every city they lived: St. Louis, MO, Dayton, OH, San Diego, CA, and Greensboro, NC. Upon Mike’s retirement in 1994 they returned to Macon to be close to their families. She also held a variety of jobs during those years, including English teacher, travel agent, interior decorator, and 17 years at Macon Magazine.

In Macon, she was a member of the Potpourri Garden Club, Happy Bookers book club, Friends of the Library, and various and sundry bridge groups. However, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and beloved grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Honey.”

In addition to her parents, Carla was preceded in death by her uncle, H.T. Sullivan, cousins, Philip (Ruthie) Sullivan and Tommy (Jean) Sullivan, and great niece, Murray Nixon. She is survived by her three children, Roger (Emi) Dodd, Ginger (Baxley) Chew, and Caroline Peterson; grandchildren: Hana and Mike Dodd, Henry, Virginia and Stella Chew, and Lily Peterson; sister-in-law, Josie Solomon; nieces, Laura (Russ) Campbell and Jodi (Craig) Bowman; and companion, Jim Hanson.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at Hart’s Chapel at the Cupola. The family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
